Over 300 students of Stamford College ushered in the Year of the Rat with a bang at the Chinese New Year celebrations held on 20 February 2008 at Stamford College PJ. The celebrations started with a lion dance around the college. To some international students, it was their first time watching a lion dance and they were amazed at the colourful display.

"The lion dance is very interesting, vibrant and full of colour. It is certainly very entertaining." said Galo Viteri, a student from Ecuador.

The guest of honor for the night was MCA Public Services & Complaints Department Head Datuk Michael Chong. In his speech, he thanked Stamford College for inviting him to the event. He encouraged international students to get to know Malaysian festivals and to enjoy them with their local friends.

" Being in Malaysia and studying is just not enough. You must go back home with wonderful experiences of the myriad cultures and festivals that we celebrate here, " he said.

Executive Chairman of Stamford College, Dato Hj Abd. Halim Hj Abd. Samad surprised many when he greeted everybody in Mandarin. He then wished all Chinese students and staff a happy year of the Rat. He encouraged international students to enjoy the celebrations and to learn about them.

Cathy Jing Xiao, an international student from China who was the co-emcee at the event said that she was glad to see so many students from diverse backgrounds attending the event. "I am a new student and this is simply great! This celebration truly makes me feel like I was home."

"I really liked the celebration, it is lively and the atmosphere is filled with festivity, but the lion dance did scare me a little", said Aishthah Noora Waseem, another student from Maldives.

"Many programmes were lined up to ensure that everybody enjoys the celebration this year and most of them were organised by the students themselves," said En.Sahak, Head of the Student Services Department.

Datuk Michael Chong, Dato Haji Abdul Halim and Mr.Andrew Choo, later gave out ang pows to students and staff.
