Stamford College contributed to the community by awarding scholarships to the Star Education fund in January 2008. The scholarships were in Hospitality Management, Corporate Administration, Executive Secretaryship, Human Resource Management, Media and Communication, Business Studies and Electronic and Electrical Engineering.Stamford College has contributed at every Star Eduaction Fund since its inception and has been one of its most consistent supporters.

The Star Education Fair was held on 12 and 13 January 2008. The opening ceremony was officiated by Deputy Higher Education Minister, Datuk Ong Tee Keat. In his opening speech, he said that this education fair should even consider going regional. He then received the awards from various representatives from universities and private colleges who pledged towards the fund. Dato Hj Abdul Halim, Stamford's Executive Chairman, presented the awards from Stamford College to Datuk Ong Tee Kiat.

This year the event pulled in the crowds, occupying all 5 halls at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), with over 150 exhibitors and 430 booths.

The Stamfordonline booth also attracted many curious onlookers. Many were excited that there are ways to obtain degrees while not having to attend classes. " This means I can work and support my family and at the same time obtain a good qualification," said Belinda Choo, a student from Gemas.

The A-levels programme was also heavily marketed by Stamford 'A' level students themselves.

Kar Mun receives her prize from the Korean sponsors

Poon Kar Mun, 20, a student of the Diploma in Corporate Administration programme at Stamford College Kuala Lumpur has always had an interest in watching Korean serials and movies. She loved the lifestyle and the language. Soon after her SPM she pursued a Korean Language course.

Last October, Kar Mun participated in a Korean Speech Competition organised by the Korean Embassy here in Malaysia. Out of 170 applications only 30 lucky ones were short-listed. "I never really had the confidence but I really wanted the exposure, I really did not expect to win," said Kar Mun. She, however, won the grand prize and a trip to Korea. Kar Mun hopes that in the future she can be a translator for the Korean language.

Visit from Korean students

The Korean delegation with Mr Andrew and Ms Lee                              Thumbs up for Malaysian food!

Some 20 students from a Rotary Club in Korea paid a friendly visit to Stamford College on 17 January 2008. They were led by the Governor of the Club, Mr Lee Young Ho. The students were aged between 15-20 years old.  According to Mr. Lee, the main purpose of this visit is to expose the students to the multicultural environment in Malaysia.

"In Korea we only have one culture, one language and one food, here its a variety. I have stayed in Malaysia for 10 years and knowing the cultural diversity of the country, I recommended Malaysia for this exchange programme" said Mr.Lee with a smile. He added that he is happy to be back.

The students proceeded to the auditorium where they watched a video presentation on Stamford College. Then they joined in the activities organised by the Student Council and briefings by Mr Matthew and Mrs Das from SELC.

" I am seriously considering to learn English in Stamford College, When I go back to Korea I will speak to my parents about it," said Mei-Jin, a delighted 16 year old student.

Identified!

A good move by the authorities

The I-Kad is an identification card issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department for foreign students. More than 200 international students from Stamford College registered for this card recently. The immigration officers came on 21 and 22 January to Stamford and issued the I-Kads to the students. A temporary registration office was set up to make it easier for students to register without them having to visit the department.

With possession of the I-Kad, foreign students no longer need to carry their passports around and face with the risk of losing it or being arrested.

"This is a good effort by the government of Malaysia and now its easier and faster for us to identify ourselves to the authorities when needed," said Omar Hussien from Iraq.
