57th Annual Stamford Graduation
Ceremony
Stamford Graduates Mark
Another National Aspiration

Stamford College - marking another
milestone in education.
Stamford Colleges 57th Annual
Graduation ceremony was held on 17 November
2007 at the Putra World Trade Centre. More than 700 students
graduated in different fields of study with 16 students awarded a
first class honours by the University of East London. The guest of
honour, YB. Dato Sri Zulhasnan Rafique, Minister for Federal
Territories said that the ceremony also marked the achievement of
a national aspiration towards achieving a more educated
society.
Dato Sri Zulhasnan Rafique said in his speech
that, In 1957, when Malaysia became independent and took over the
responsibility for charting her destiny, she had but one
university. Very few institutions provided education beyond the
secondary level. Today, there are 40 universities, most of them
established in the last ten years. Stamford was one of the
pioneers in offering private education for those who wanted
professional and post secondary qualifications."
Dato Sri Zulhasnan Rafique also said that out of
innovative collaboration between Stamford and different foreign
universities, university education is now made available to a very
large section of the community. This also attracted foreign
students as they turn to Malaysia for higher education.
Dato Seri Zulhasnan Rafique also addressed
unemployment, a major problem with todays graduates.
"Universities should ensure that their courses are relevant to the
job market. In this respect, Stamford College has established a
division to improve the employable skills of their graduates.
While education is vital in securing a job and
earning capacity, students must pay particular attention to what
is described as soft skills. These include the ability to
communicate properly, to present themselves well and work with a
diverse group of people in the workplace," he stated.
The ceremony brought together the graduates and
their families in celebration of a lifetimes achievement.
The elected valedictorian, Gary Lee Chong Wey,
one of the twelve University of East London graduates in
engineering with a first class honours, said that the college had
managed to not only provide education but also instill meaningful
values among the students. In his valedictory speech he added,
"with this qualification, I have earned a working passport with a
multinational company and I am confident in matching world class
standards".
The Annual Graduation Dinner was a lively affair
with guests, friends and family getting together for dinner and
performances by students and staff.
