School of

Public Seminar
on Law
The School of Education and Law and the School
of Foundation Studies of Stamford College jointly organised
a Public Seminar on Law on Saturday, 18 August 2007 at the
Stamford Auditorium. The turnout which included parents of
students was overwhelming.
The purpose of the seminar was to raise issues on
specifically related areas of law. The presenters were students
reading A-level and LLB (Hons) programmes. They were Ms Ann
Marilyn Horley Isaacs, Ms Simran Kaur, Mr Choo Kang Wei and Ms
Aishath Auliya. The event began with a speech by the Academic
Director, Mr Menon who stressed on the importance of acquiring the
necessary legal skills and the role played by law in protecting
rights of the public.

Dr Tan Seng Tek and Mr Baljeet Singh
with Stamford law students at the seminar
The first speaker, Ms Marilyn who is currently
doing her A-Level study, presented on Equity and the
Development of Common Law. Her topic touched on the concept
of conscience, justice and fairness of equity in common law. She
explored the role of equity in relation to the common law, and the
contribution of equitable principles at both domestic and
international dispute settlements.
Ms Simran, another A-Level student presented on
The Value of Stare Decisis in the 21st
Century. She debated the value of stare decisis in the
21st century basically renouncing Ronald Dworkins
Chain Novel Series theory and the doctrine of formal justice in
precedents. The theme of the presentation was that developing
ideologies on morality, equity and feminism have increasingly
caused uncertainty and unpredictability in precedents.
The third presenter was Mr Choo, a first year LLB
(Hons) student whose presentation was The Defence of Insanity
in Modern Criminal Law. The paper touched on the concept of
insanity in modern criminal law, conflicts of insanity defence in
relation to European Convention of Human Rights, and the
distinctions between the legal and medical tests on insanity and
the consequences of the unbridgeable differences.Lastly, Ms
Auliya, a LLB (Hons) student presented on Morality and
Principles of Causation at Criminal Law. She explored
influence of morality in relation to causation at criminal law,
and examined the controversies in R v Blaue together with
the criminalisation of omissions by comparing the United Kingdom
and international position.
In his concluding remarks, Mr Menon congratulated
the speakers. On a more serious note, he reminded students to be
careful about plagiarism as this is the major issue in scholarship
today. He concluded by saying he had no doubts that the presenters
would one day make good lawyers and perhaps be great
judges. He then presented certificates to all 4 presenters for
their contributions.
