Stamfordonline programmes

The Deputy Minister
of Education, Malaysia, Y.B.Dato' Noh Bin Haji Omar will
launch Stamford College's Online Learning portal, Stamfordonline, on Monday 3
September 2007 at 2.30pm at Stamford
College PJ Jalan 223. The new portal will offer Stamford full time
and part time students online support for their courses
progressively. The portal will also be beneficial for
schools and the community at large as it will also provide an
opportunity to obtain academic support and qualifications
through online learning.
In 1951, Stamford College was
the first college to offer correspondence courses in Malaya. At
that time it provided students who wanted to pursue higher
education a convenient and affordable method of learning. The
move towards e-learning and even m-learning (mobile -learning) has
now taken hold in the country.
Stamford with this new
partnership with NetAcademy( a leader in e-learning) will now
provide students this new and innovative channel to students who
need higher education.
Stamford College Toastmasters
Club receives Distinguished Club Award

The Stamford Toastmasters Club was recently
awarded the Distinguished Club Award by the Toastmasters
International Club at Stamford College. The Award was presented to
the Immediate Past President of the Club, Toastmaster Mr Andrew
Choo, who is also the Director of Legal and Administration of the
College. The Award is granted in recognition of the Club�s
achievement of the overall objectives of the Club. Distinguished
Toastmaster S. K. Ratnam, presented the award to Mr Choo on behalf
of Toastmasters International.
" This is a great honour for
the Stamford Toastmasters Club. We are glad that we have achieved
this recognition from the International Toastmasters Club. The
Club was formed to assist students and staff to be able to speak
and present their ideas and proposals in a confident manner to any
audience. The response to the Club has been overwhelming and this
is an indication that they are willing to better themselves. Most
organisations today place a premium on graduates who are good and
confident in making presentation, " said Mr Choo.
He added that he had
personally seen how students who were weak in English and poor in
public speaking make dramatic improvements to their oratory
skills. The Stamford Toastmasters Club was formed in October of
2005. Most of the Committee members are students of the

Annual Graduation Ceremony
Stamford College will hold its Annual
Graduation Ceremony on Saturday 17 November 2007 at the
Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre.
More details will be provided later.

Sports Carnival 2007
The Annual Stamford Sports Carnival is now
confirmed to be held on Saturday 25 August 2007 at the
DBKL Sports Club at Jalan Brickfields from 7.30 am to 5
pm.
The games that will be played are Badminton,
Football, Basketball, Netball, Table -tennis, Volleyball, Street
Soccer, Tug - of - War.
All are welcome to the Carnival. Please contact
your Centre representatives.

College International students get I-Kad
Stamford international student filling

Stamford College international students registered for the
I-Kad ( identification cards issued by the Immigration Department)
at the college on 19 July 2007. Over 400 Stamford international
students went through the process of taking photos and registering
for the new cards. The I-Kads will eliminate all the earlier
problems that international students encountered.
Ali Bakar a student from Saudi Arabia said that the new cards
will be beneficial for foreign students as now they will be
able to identify themselves immediately when they are asked to
produce their identification papers by the authorities.
" It will be safer for us too since we will be able to carry
it along when we go out. I am glad the government of Malaysia
is concerned about our safety and welfare, "he said.

"It
opens doors, which opens up even more doors." That�s how Lim Wen
Bin, a former student of Stamford College and Chung Hua High
School, Seremban, describes what education has done for him.
Wen Bin was awarded the "Emeritus Professor Prize" � an award
given to the top two performing students for the programme at the
London School of Economics. He did his A-levels at Stamford
College in January 2002. After completing his A-levels, he did a
year of psychology in Melbourne. Wen Bin moved on to the
University of Warwick in England to pursue a Bachelors Degree in
Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics. He
obtained a second class upper for the degree. He then continued
doing his postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics
(LSE) pursuing a Masters of Science in Finance and Economics. It
was here that he was awarded the "Emeritus Professor Prize".
The prize winners are decided at the Exam Board Meeting.
"Pursuing my Masters was the most difficult thing
I�ve ever done in my life. It has taught me the value of hard work
and I felt excited competing with my fellow classmates, most of
whom were very bright."
"Completing my A-levels at Stamford College gave
me a strong foundation in my further studies. The secondary and
pre-university education at Stamford College gave me an excellent
foundation to build my studies on. It gave confidence and
enthusiasm to pursue my higher education. Everything that I have
done, good or bad has made me who I am today. The good things
built my wisdom, the bad built my character."

DHRM programme
receives LAN accreditation
Stamford KL has obtained LAN accreditation for
the Diploma in Human Resource Management.
In receiving the news that the DHRM programme
has been accredited Mr Mohan, the Assistant Centre Director, said
that a lot of hard work had gone into ensuring the documentation
for the accreditation process was in order.
"It was a good team effort and I would
like to thank Dr Gregory Thong, the HOS of the programme, staff
and the people involved in making this effort a success.'

Stamford College KL- Doing a
world of good!
The Mass Comm Club of Stamford College KL
organised a trip to Port Dickson on the 11 and 12 May
2007. Twenty-three students, including four lecturers, stayed at
the Glory Beach Resort, Port Dickson. The purpose of this trip was
to foster closer rapport and understanding among students and
lecturers. This was the first time for all Mass Comm students to
have an outing near the beachside.

Fun-filled activities were held during those two
days. Mass Comm committee members organised a few outdoor games
such as beach volleyball and telematches, as well as indoor
activities like group brainstorming to bring students closer with
their lecturers.
As a token of appreciation, a barbeque
buffet dinner and a certificate-giving ceremony was held for
students who organised events like the Stamford Idol,
Blood Donation Campaign and Zoo Negara Trip.

Students� feedback on the PD trip was
positive but some said that one night was not
enough. The trip was satisfactory as the students and
lecturers had fulfilled the objective of this trip, which was to
create rapport between the lecturers and students.
SCKL
organises part time get together
A get together was
organised for all part time students on 19 June 2007. About 35
students attended the gathering. The session started with the
Centre�s Assistant Director, Mr.S.R. Mohan�s speech. Followed by
his address, Mr. Kalaiarasan, Lecturer In Charge of the School of
Hospitality and Tourism Management gave a quick round up of all
the courses that are offered in SCKL
Following this, Ms. Shasi
Priya, a lecturer from the School of Hospitality and Tourism
Management presented an interesting topic on �Office Etiquette and
Behaviour� which was well received by the students. Refreshments
were served at the end of the session
The objective of this
gathering was three fold: to keep them informed of the subjects
and courses offered in Stamford; to build rapport with part time
students; and to allow an opportunity for all part time students
to get to know one another.
An exciting
orientation for freshies at SCKL
The freshies in Stamford
College Kuala Lumpur had an exciting orientation for 4 days on 18
June and 19 June and 25 June and 26 June.
The mood was upbeat with
music and mirth on the first day in the auditorium in SCKL The new
students had many activities in store for the four days. The
programme for the first week of the orientation (Monday 18 June
and 19 June 2007) was mainly for familiarising the new students
with college environment, the staff, the Heads of Department and
the Student Council members.
The orientation also
included talks, performances by students and induction
programmes.

LLB Intermediate Student Orientation with SoEL staff on 6
August 2007.

Motivation
talk
Thirty five students selected were sent
by two secondary schools to attend a motivation talk at SCM
on Friday, 29 June from 2 to 5 pm.
The facilitators for the talk were Mrs. Anthony
(motivation), Mr. Frankie (self-esteem) and Ms Asmahani (team
building games). The four school counsellors who attended the
talk congratulated SCM and presented the facilitators with
souvenirs for the interesting session. They also
requested if more such sessions could be conducted for their
school prefects and other school leaders in the near
future.

Peers play their role
Peer educators of Stamford
College Malacca (SCM), with the Family Planning Association
Malacca, supported by the Ministry of Health and the Malaysian
Aids Council organised a one day workshop entitled "SAY NO TO
AIDS" on 22 May 2007. The purpose of the workshop was to
spread the awareness on HIV / AIDS to the students of SCM. The
peer educators opened the doors for group activities and exchange
of ideas among the participants. The programme was aimed at
bringing about behavioural change among students to reduce the
number of HIV / AIDS cases especially among young people in
Malaysia.

The facilitators for the
workshop were Madam Mehalah Lingam from the Family Planning
Malacca Association of Malacca, Mr. Aaron Mahendran K and Mr.
Daniel Gopi from Shekinah Home Services Sdn. Bhd., Ms. Sim Kay
Hiong and Ms. Kejal Hasmuk (volunteers) and the SCM peer
educators.
This workshop was held in
conjunction with the International Aids Memorial Day on 20 May
2007.
Fruit carving
competition
The first
prize
On 27 July 2007 SOHTM club organised
a Fruit carving competition- "Fruity creations". Fifty
students participated in the competition. Chef Abdul Latif from
Hotel Seri Costa was the chief judge for the contest. The
criteria used were cleanliness, presentation,cooperation
and aesthetic balance.The winner of the competition was 'Fruity
Smoothies Ice Kacang group'.
