The Vice President of Xinjiang Agricultural Vocational Technical College, Mr. Yang Gui Quan, visited Stamford College on 22-23 January 2007.

Mr. Yang, who was accompanied by his colleague Ms. Song Yan, was greeted warmly by Mr. Andrew Choo, Director of Legal and Administration, and senior management of Stamford. The purpose of the meeting was to seek further collaboration between the two colleges and to secure an agreement from the Xinjiang Agricultural Vocational Technical College to send more students to Stamford College.

The meeting started off with video footages from the two colleges, showing student activities, students� testimonials as well as Stamford's academic activities.

The Star Education Fair was in full swing this year bringing in 163 exhibitors who took up 370 booths. The 19th Star Education Fair was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) for two days: Saturday, 6 January and Sunday, 7 January 2007.

In her opening address at the official opening of the fair, Dato� Ng Poh Tip, Group Editorial/Education Advisor of the Star Publications described the fair as the ideal platform for students to make their choices for academic courses after their SPM/STPM results.

In his speech, Y. B. Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan On, Minister of Human Resources, commended the Star for assisting to promote education in Malaysia.

"The Star has exceeded itself. It has been truly exceptional in promoting education in this country. The education fair plays a pivotal role in helping to make Malaysia a regional hub of educational excellence," he said.

The Minister also touched on unemployment and soft skills. To help graduates become employable, the government has introduced a six-month course, which focuses on soft skills. However, he also mentioned that students could enhance their soft skills by taking part-time jobs.

The official opening culminated with presentation of scroll to the representatives from universities and colleges that awarded the scholarships. A total of 322 scholarship awards have been pledged to students.

Stamford College has pledged scholarships in Engineering, Business Studies, Hospitality Management, Media Studies, Executive Secretaryship and Corporate Administration.


Prominent Chilean academic visits Stamford

Dr Gerardo Rocha, the President of Universidad Santo Tomas, a prestigious Chilean private university, recently visited Stamford College on Monday, 8 January 2007. His Excellency, Patricio Torres, the Ambassador of Chile, accompanied him together with Mr A. Ganapathy, the former Malaysian Ambassador to Chile.

The delegation met with Stamford's senior management to discuss bilateral issues including student exchange programmes and the various programmes offered by the both Stamford College and Universidad Santo Tomas.


UEL Representatives at Stamford

Mr John Cocking, Ms Lesley Duncombe and Mr John Sparrowhawk, representatives from the University of East London, were at the School of Business and Marketing on 26 January to chair the Field Board (exam board) Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to ratify the results of the students in the international business and marketing programmes.

Besides conducting the Field Board Meeting, the UEL panel conducted a staff development-training programme to brief SOBM lecturers to enhance the delivery and teaching skills of the UEL modules in the business programmes.

School of Hospitality and Tourism Management
Once Again!
 
Stamford College has been rated the No 1 Hospitality School of the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute for 2006 in the Asia-Pacific once again this year.
 
 This is the second consecutive year that the School has achieved this.
 
Congratulations to the Head of School, Mr Reginald Pereira, all lecturers and staff of the School in Stamford KL, Melaka, Kuching, Sabah and Penang.
 

NEW APPOINTMENTS

Mr Raja Mohan

 Mr Raja Mohan has been appointed as the Assistant Centre Director, Stamford KL Group with effect from 5 February 2007.

Dr Gregory Thong

Dr Gregory Thong Tin Sin has been appointed the Head of School, School of Human Resource Management. He retired from the University of Malaya as Professor of Business Administration and has served as Chairman in the Division of Business Administration and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya. A life member of the Malaysian Institute of Human Resource Management and member of the  Institution of Engineers, Malaysia, Dr Thong was also a Visiting Professor to the Graduate School of International Development and Cooperation, Hiroshima University, Japan. He was also  Head of the Human Resource and Industrial Management Division as well as  Associate Professor in the School of Accountancy & Business at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.


 
 
Mr Baljeet Singh

 Mr Baljeet Singh, LLB Hons (Wales/Aberystwyth, 1992), CLP (2003), and Advocate & Solicitor (2004) has joined the Stamford College School of Education & Law as Law Coordinator and Lecturer as from 8 January 2007.

Law Preview
 
A Law Preview will be conducted at SCPJ Jalan 223 Auditorium on Saturday 10th Feb 2007, from 10am to 11.30am, with the following speakers and topics:
 
Ms Gurmit Kaur - Why Study Law
Mr Baljeet Singh - Life as a Practising Lawyer
Encik Wan Azlan - 'The Relationship between the Government and Citizens.'
Dr Tan Seng Teck - Importance of Criminal Law in a Chaotic Society
Each presenter will speak for 10 minutes followed by questions and comments from the floor.

 
The next Certificate in Teaching Course (CITC) will be conducted at SCPJ Jalan Barat on Saturdays 10th, 17th, 24th March, and 14th April 2007, from 9am to 1pm and from 2pm to 6pm."

Indonesian Delegates at Stamford

A four-day conference at PWTC organised by PT Indonesian Human Resource System (IHRS) was attended by more than 150 delegates representing vocational schools throughout Indonesia and state government officers involved in manpower planning.

As the exclusive representative of the American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute in the Asia Pacific region, Stamford College was invited to deliver a presentation on Hospitality Education. Mr. U.K. Menon and Mr. Reginald Pereira delivered the presentation on 25 January 2007.

The Chairman of PT IHRS, Mrs. Irbar Masri, and Managing Director of IHRS Malaysia, Mr. Rizky Ridwan, subsequently visited Stamford College on 26 January. They met with the senior management to discuss the hospitality certification programme in Indonesia. Present at the meeting were Dato� Hj Abdul Halim, Mr. Andrew Choo, Mr. U.K. Menon, Dr. Chew Sing Buan and Mr. Reginald Pereira.
