SYNOPSIS

The course starts with an introduction to general concepts about the purpose of law and the rights and obligations it imposes on individuals before proceeding to deal with specific laws that affect the media. Media laws are presented as part of the constitutional provisions on free speech and expression. The laws of sedition, defamation, official secrets and other laws that affect the functions and processes of media are examined within the framework of constitutional rights. At the same time, the impact of law on media is examined from the perspective of some of the more common activities and functions of the media practitioner so that students will be able to see the relevance of law to the overall course they are studying.
