OBJECTIVES
The student should be able to understand what PR is and how it got started as early forms of communication. One step towards this is the creation of a corporate identity and the use of house journals. Students also need to know the origins of modern PR and the development of newer communication media and the development of PR consultant.

LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  • Understand about the role and functions of public relations and the importance of it in every modern organisation.
  • Understand the principle and functions of public relations
  • Know ways and techniques of writing and also the ability to interact with others.

  • Understand how Public Relations started
  • Explain the beginnings of Public Relations

2. Public Relations Defined and distinguished

  • Give definitions of Public Relations
  • Explain the following: advertising, sales promotion, propaganda, publicity and Public Relations
  • Know the types of images
  • Explain a Public Relations practitioner's characteristics

3. Public Relations Consultants and departments

  • Know what a Public Relations consultancy is.
  • Understand the fee structure.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a Public Relations consultancy.
  • Understand the need for internal Public Relations department.
  • Outline the Public Relations departments activities.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a Public Relations department.
