OBJECTIVES
To
teach the basic principles of corporate finance and how it interrelates
to business organisations; to teach the basic financial statements
including the profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statements;
to teach the basics of capital budgeting; to teach and explain
short-term financial management; to teach and explain long-term
financial management.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Upon completion of this subject, learners should be able to:
- explain the different types of business structure
- list and explain the different stakeholders in a business organisation
- analyze the interest of shareholder vs. other stakeholders
- evaluate and explain the agency problem and how to overcome it
- read and evaluate the different components of the financial statements and how each relates to one another
- calculate and interpret accounting ratios from the financial
statements including asset management, liquidity, and debt management
ratios
- explain the differences between mutually exclusive and independent projects
- explain and calculate the various methods of evaluating capital projects including NPV, payback period, IRR
- analyse and explain the time value of money and discount rate used in methods to evaluate capital.
SYNOPSIS
This
subject introduces student to basic understanding of the theories
governing corporate finance and financial management. Includes a study
of local and foreign financial management policies.
