OBJECTIVES
The objective of the subject is know more about computer hardware, applications software and operating systems; to understand the internet operation of the computer; the relationship between input and output; the concepts of storage and multimedia; how computers are connected via networks; the Internet as a resource for mankind; the use of the Internet in business, corporations and entrepreneurs; the security and privacy issues of computers and the Internet; the application concepts of word processing, spreadsheets and databases; the models and approaches of Management Information System.

LEARNING OUTCOME
On completion of this subject, the learners should be able to:

  • identify the basic components of a computer system and familiar with the various classifications of computers
  • differentiate between operating systems and application software
  • identify the components of the central processing unit and how they run and interact with memory
  • describe the input and output of a computer system and differentiate among various input equipment
  • identify storage media available for personal computers and multimedia
  • list the basic components of the network.
  • explain the transmission methods, including types of signals, modulation and choices among transmission modes and differentiate the various kinds of communications links
  • explain purpose and function of a browser
  • describe the need for security, basic functions of word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

SYNOPSIS

ICT in the business environment. The World Wide Web and the Internet. Local and wide area networks. Databases and data mining. Office automation. Current issues on ICT, including piracy, privacy issues, censorship and control.
