OBJECTIVES
This
module provides hands-on spreadsheet application. It teaches the
concepts and the practical knowledge thereof in order to produce
students who are well-versed in elementary to intermediate level
spreadsheet skills; This module provides hands-on database application.
It teaches database concepts via a popular database package, in order
to produce students who are well-versed with elementary to intermediate
competency of Microsoft Access skills. The areas covered will be basic
database concepts and processing skills, query and form production.
LEARNING OUTCOME
On completion of this subject, the learners should be able to:
list the various components of a database, in the
context of a business system,
design and populate the components of a database based on the user
requirements of a business system,
design and use queries in order to produce a selection of data across
one or more tables,
design and create forms in order to allow user-friendly entry of data,
design and create reports in order to generate hardcopy listings and
summary information for senior management consumption,
explain the purpose of desktop publishing (DTP) in the context of
marketing and advertising,
list the main DTP applications available today,
list and explain the three areas of DTP: image editing, illustration
and page layout,
apply desktop publishing techniques in the process of planning,
designing, creation, and printing of publications,
demonstrate how each of the following design principles apply to a
publication: organization, simplicity, tone, visual variety, reader
assistance, consistency and accuracy,
use style sheets to promote appearance by defining text attributes in a
publication,
select appropriate typeface for greatest effect and apply formatting
control through the manual use of automatic leading, kerning and
hyphenation capabilities,
select and produce effective graphics in a publication.
SYNOPSIS
Description
and functions of databases; creation of databases using Microsoft
Access. The concept of desktop publishing using computer and
information technology; different types of electronic publications
according to use and function; fonts and typefaces; formatting the page
using text, headings and alignments, setting up pages using margins and
columns; use of boxes and tables; enhancement of documents using
colour; using the Internet as a resource for desktop publishing.
